Before I delve into the multiple improvements in comfort, lifestyle, people I can meet, variety of vegetables I can buy, or fancy services (including pizza delivery!) I can access as a result of my move to Lira, I'll take a moment for a small piece of nostalgia. Although Kalongo didn't become so special for me as Karamoja, there are still many things that I'll miss about it.
The rock, the flowers, the peace and quiet.
The sights of early morning Acholi land.
The yard of our office in the mission, with its flowers and goats running around.
The wall I used to sit on in the evenings (ok, I don't have a picture actually sitting on it. You'll need to imagine it).
And the work, the team, and the three small projects I worked on there. I liked my Kalongo projects. I had finally got to know them properly - which took me some time; I had helped to write one of them a re-write another, and I would have liked to see them finished. On the bright side though, my replacement is a very nice Italian girl who knows the region and who will do fantastically there - and who besides is a support force sharing the field perspective. Although she is three hours away, it makes a difference now that it's two of us working upcountry!
